SESSION 01: New network architecture possibilities for 6G

As we move towards the era of 6G, there is a growing need to reimagine the foundational architecture of future networks to support transformative use cases such as immersive communication, integrated sensing, intelligent machine collaboration, and sustainability. The 6G architecture is expected to be built on principles of modularity, simplicity, and service-centric design, with cloud-native, AI-native, and zero-touch capabilities. It needs to seamlessly integrate terrestrial and non-terrestrial components, support real-time responsiveness across distributed systems, and operate efficiently across diverse frequency bands.

This session explored architectural enablers that were essential to the 6G vision, including:

  • Converged and flexible radio and core networks with disaggregated, service-based components
  • Cross-domain orchestration and intelligence-driven resource management
  • Support for highly localized computing and AI inference at the edge
  • Built-in sustainability and energy efficiency through architectural optimization
  • Seamless integration of communication, computation, and sensing layers

The panel and keynote brought together leading experts to deliberate on how next-generation network architectures could address the technological, economic, and societal challenges of the 6G era. Discussions emphasized how architecture choices at that time could ensure future readiness, interoperability, and global competitiveness—while aligning with national priorities for innovation and digital sovereignty.

SESSION 02: Will AI find a central role in 6G?
SESSION SILVER SPONSOR:

As 6G ushers in a new era of unleashing possibilities for futuristic applications with hyper experiences through a reliable, real-time, resilient, and secure physical-to-digital continuum, it also challenges the limits of existing technologies. At the same time, a trend towards the assimilation of advanced AI technologies into end-to-end networks and related use cases emerged in every layer of the network, including applications and services. This leads to the exploration of using AI Native for Networks (AINN) as an important area under the vision of IMT 2030. Simultaneously, the evolution of new AI techniques—such as generative AI, reasoning models, and agentic frameworks—upended workflows across all spheres of technology.

Against this global backdrop, the session dived deep into important issues such as: Would advanced AI techniques bring quantifiable benefits while addressing the challenges in 6G, such as the management and operation of complex networks and services? It was also important to explore and prioritize relevant standardization gaps.

There are two complementing pathways—namely, Networks for AI (cross-domain data sharing, model transfer requirements, federated pipelines) and AI for Networks (domain/application-specific fine-tuned models, AI-native architectures, and applications). These two pathways required closer examination in the context of 6G networks as well as for applications and services.

The session studied practical problems from use cases and datasets, models and toolsets, research directions, and deployment models. The outcomes included identifying further areas of study within TSDSI and its global partners, and pointed out specific opportunities for collaboration.

Session Co-Chairs: Abhijan Bhattacharyya (Tata Consultancy Services), Rajagopalan Rajappa (Tata Elxsi) Session Convener: Vishnu Ram (TSDSI) Session Coordinator: Chandrakanta Rathore Session Schedule: 15 July 2025, 16:30-18:45 IST
SESSION 03: Future path and Challenges for integration of Non-Terrestrial (Satellite, HAPS and UAVs) & Terrestrial Networks for 6G communication

Ubiquitous connectivity is an important usage scenario for 6G which was championed by India in the ITU-R framework for IMT2030. It is meant to bridge the digital divide globally. While extended uplink coverage from a terrestrial perspective is a key performance requirement of 6G, non-terrestrial networks will supplement the terrestrial networks in providing coverage especially in sparsely populated, remote and inaccessible areas for at least basic broadband services. We will require integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks to have seamless handover. Though, progress has been made in achieving some degree of integration at a systems level, integration at the radio layer with various types of non-terrestrial platforms (satellite, HAPS, UAVs) is necessary for ubiquitous delivery of the intended services uniformly to all users.

As the name of this session suggests, we heard from the experts in both keynote and panel discussion format about current status in technology, challenges for this integration and the way forward to achieve the seamless integration.

SESSION 04: Security in a hyper connected world, especially for 6G

As 6G technologies begins to take shape, establishing robust security foundations is essential to ensuring trust, resilience, and privacy in an increasingly hyper-connected and intelligent digital landscape. This session explored emerging security paradigms and strategic technologies necessary to safeguard 6G infrastructures against next-generation threats, including those stemming from quantum computing, distributed architectures, and large-scale edge deployments.

Key topics included the transition to quantum-safe cryptography, focusing on both Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and the integration of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The session also highlighted how blockchain technologies enabled decentralized identity and access management, as well as dynamic spectrum allocation, through secure and transparent ledgers. These capabilities offer stronger security assurances by reducing dependency on centralized authorities and enhancing trust among network participants. Additionally, the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enabling adaptive, real-time threat detection and response was explored, showcasing how AI improved network resilience in rapidly evolving environments. SESSION 06: The OFDM dilemma and Potential new Waveforms for 6G

The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) which is a primary backbone for 4G and 5G technologies as it offered many advantages like higher spectral efficiency and a higher resilience towards multi path fading compared to the previous generation data transmission techniques. But, OFDM also offered high Peak-to-Average-Power Ratio (PAPR), poor spectral containments as well. Along with other known limitations OFDM also pose other challenges for extreme mobility and extreme high traffic density scenarios envisioned in 6G due to its high sensitivity towards Doppler shifts. Though with these challenges – while keeping OFDM into consideration, researchers are also exploring potential new waveforms such as Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC), Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), and Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) and more specifically Zak-OTFS. These alternatives are proposed to offer better spectral efficiency, robustness to Doppler shifts, and helps in coexistence with other wireless technologies.

Thus, there is a need to delve into a much deeper study on assessing the right waveform for the future technologies wherein we look forward to continuing to use the legacy data stream techniques like OFDM for better cost advantages OR knowing the limitations we look forward to assessing the waveforms for future technologies. Thus, is the OFDM dilemma and Potential new waveforms for 6G!!
