Achieving the “Bharat 6G Vision” hinged on the timely identification, efficient allocation, and utilization of the radio spectrum, the fundamental resource for wireless communication.
Projections from global bodies like GSA and GSMA indicated that the initial rollout of IMT-2030 (6G) would require an additional 400 to 500 MHz of spectrum per network. The World Radiocommunication Conference 2023 (WRC-23) identified potential spectrum in various bands, including the crucial 6 GHz band, which offered 700 MHz of contiguous spectrum.
This session explored the spectrum roadmap for IMT in India over the next decade, examining potential spectrum sources and outlining the necessary steps post-WRC-23 to ensure the sustained growth of 5G and the successful realization of Bharat’s 6G vision. Attendees gained insights into spectrum management strategies, regulatory considerations, and the critical milestones that would shape India’s journey to 6G leadership.

In today’s world, shaped by ICT technologies, digital equity had gained center stage. Even as 6G use cases and technologies were being conceptualized, there was an increasing focus on measuring their role in creating value for society. This focus was reflected in the IMT-2030 Framework document’s wheel diagram, which outlined four overarching design principles: sustainability, connecting the unconnected, ubiquitous intelligence, and security & resilience. Similarly, several capabilities of its Palette diagram stemmed directly from societal needs. The recently held 3GPP Stage 1 workshop on “IMT2030 Use Cases” discussed examples of societal needs such as quality of life (including serving aging populations), digital equity, privacy and trust, public safety, localization, economic growth, and sustainability.
This session aimed to discuss key societal needs, technology-driven use cases to address these needs, and the realization of values that benefit society. It featured keynotes and a panel discussion on the emerging concept of key value indicators to measure societal impact. Key findings from the conference technical sessions, held earlier from 16 to 18 July, on Usage Scenarios and Technologies were used as reference points for the discussions in this session.
